The Merriam-Webster Word of the Day yesterday

hoopla, an excited to-do, exaggerated ballyhoo,

reminds me of the joy of words

with two sounds that skew

left and right, or words with the same vowel

first and second, words that follow through

when other words back out, feckless crosshairs

trending like a neuralace, threading person-

by-person throughout social media, through-

out our language, into all of us, one after

another, me and you, churning

beyond our control, beyond

some scalawag’s hullabaloo,

into the technological

point before

the boom.
